Purpose of the Position:


The Test Engineer provides critical services and support to the Test Manager in developing, managing, updating, and executing system test plans, procedures, and reports. This role involves testing in both laboratory and production environments and may include field-testing at interstate client locations. Additionally, the Test Engineer assists with collating and reporting test results, preparing for key system engineering stage gates, and documenting observations and issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test Plan Development: Create, manage, and update test plans and procedures for lab, test, and production environments, ensuring alignment with system specifications and engineering inputs.
  • Test Execution: Prepare for, conduct dry runs, and execute testing procedures under the Test Manager's supervision.
  • Collaboration: Work with system engineers to identify and address gaps in system design and documentation from a testing perspective.
  • Feedback Provision: Collaborate with Client Representatives to provide feedback to system engineers on the success or failure of test procedures.
  • Issue Reporting: Document and report all observed issues in detail to inform Defect Registers and guide engineering improvements.
  • Stage Gate Preparation: Assist in preparing documentation for System Engineering process stage gates, including Test Readiness Reviews and Engineering Review Boards.
  • Acceptance Test Reporting: Help develop, review, and improve Acceptance Test Reports from completed tests.
  • Defect Testing: Develop test procedures for defect and backlog testing as needed.
  • System Alignment: Assist Systems Engineers in maintaining alignment between test results and key system engineering artifacts.
  • Specification Development: Support Systems Engineers in developing system specification requirements artifacts, including verification rationale.
Core Skills and Qualifications:
  • Clearance: Negative Vetting Level 1 AGSVA clearance or higher.
  • Tools Experience: Familiarity with IBM DOORS and HP ALM is highly regarded.
  • Technical Skills: Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Personal Drive: Strong organizational, management, and documentation skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Team Environment: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, small team environment.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel interstate for testing and production site visits as required.
  • Location: Must be located in the vicinity of and able to work from the development lab site in Canberra.
  • IT Experience: Experience in diverse IT disciplines, focusing on physical and virtual networking.
  • Education: Tertiary qualification in an Engineering Discipline; ICT-related qualifications are highly regarded.
  • V&V Processes: Understanding of System Engineering Verification & Validation (V&V) processes and concepts is essential.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with the IT industry, specifically related to Australian Defence, including key concepts, functions, and roles is highly regarded.
  • Defence Experience: Experience in ICT (particularly Defence ICT & Mission Systems) Systems Engineering & AT&E program delivery, as well as working directly with the Australian Defence Force (ADF), is highly regarded.
Key Performance Indicators:
  • Satisfaction of the Test Manager with the support, services, and artifacts produced.
  • Successful completion and closure of test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Satisfaction of Client Representatives with test results and reporting.
  • Successful completion and closure of system regression testing and reporting.
