Infrastructure Engineer (Gateway & Network Engineer) - Federal Government

We are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Engineer (Gateway & Network Engineer) to join a major Federal Government program focused on delivering secure, reliable, and modern ICT network services. This is a hands-on technical role responsible for implementing and supporting critical gateway, cloud, and network capabilities across a complex and high-security environment.

You will work closely with architecture, security, and operations teams to ensure infrastructure services are robust, compliant, scalable, and aligned with best practice.

About the Opportunity

Our client is large Federal Government agency undergoing significant modernisation across core infrastructure platforms. You'll be joining a skilled Gateway and Network team responsible for integrating network services across the enterprise, managing third-party vendors, and ensuring the lifecycle, security, and performance of key platforms.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex environments and enjoys deep technical problem-solving, service ownership, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

As the Infrastructure Engineer, you will:

  • Deliver technical implementation and support for key network and gateway services, including:

    • Datacentre & cloud network connectivity

    • DNS & domain management

    • Email & web proxy services

    • F5 BIG-IP (Load Balancing & Access Management)

    • Intra-government communication networks

    • Internet gateway services

    • LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi & Security Service Edge (SSE) technologies

    • Remote Access & Site-to-Site VPN solutions

    • Monitoring & observability tools

  • Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot infrastructure to ensure performance, security, and availability.

  • Develop accurate technical documentation and contribute to skills and knowledge transfer within the team.

  • Participate in network project work from solution design through to deployment.

  • Work collaboratively with Architecture and Cyber Security teams to:

    • Implement standards and best practices

    • Ensure services meet compliance requirements

    • Validate that tools and solutions are fit for purpose

  • Communicate technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Support vendor-delivered services and ensure alignment with SLAs.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong hands-on experience implementing cloud and hybrid networking across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments (e.g., VNETs, security groups, private links, VPN gateways, F5 technologies).

  • Deep understanding of network security concepts, including SSE, internet gateways, DNS, proxying, and load balancing.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues and make sound technical decisions.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across technical teams and external vendors.

  • A strong customer service mindset, ideally with experience in secure or government environments.

  • Ability to contribute to documentation, operational readiness, and skills transfer requirements.

Technical Skills (Required)

  • Hands-on experience with Cloud & Hybrid Networking (VNETs, VPN Gateway, private links, F5, security groups).

  • Expert knowledge of network and security concepts including SSE, DNS, internet gateways, and proxy services.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills in multi-vendor and multi-disciplinary environments.

The Essentials

Candidates

  • 7+ years' experience in network engineering or network security roles within large enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated experience executing technical roadmaps and contributing to capability uplift.
  • Experience operationalising, documenting, and embedding new network services.
  • Experience supporting vendor-managed services under formal SLAs.
  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships with peers, vendors, and service providers.
  • Eligibility: Australian citizenship required With ASGVA Clearance perferred
  • Location: Canberra preferred (other locations may be considered).
